GUTSY MOVE GABE. Gabriel Dos Santos charged just three times:

  • the first charge after 203 miles on I-5 South at the Harris Ranch
  • the second just past the Grapevine, across from Six Flags
  • Gabe’s final charge was for just a few minutes just 3 miles shy of the endpoint – he didn’t want to have to push his bike for two hours to get over the Finish Line. In the end, he didn’t have to – gravity did the job for him from the peak of the Coronado Bridge

The full route was about 510 miles, and of the ten contestants, only six finished, all Energicas with the top five being EGO+ with the 21.5 kWh battery – the full fairing making a tremendous difference over such a distance.  The winner, Gabrielle Dos Santos, finished in 11 hours, 40 minutes, a clear 2 hours ahead of pursuing second-place finisher Patrick McBride.  The secret to his success? Gabe says he trained like an Olympic athlete for months, dropping from 170 lbs. to 127 lbs.  At just 5’ 8” he could ride completely tucked into his windscreen – not that comfortable, but definitely aerodynamic.  At the last minute, Gabe even gave his backpack to a buddy to lessen drag even further.

In the end, his risky strategy worked, with both Lightnings dropping out for technical reasons, and other contenders having to stop for two more charges.  But the final few miles were a near-run thing. Gabe placed 1st.

ELECTRIC BATTLES ENDOTHERMIC.
SuperHooligan Race, Sunday July 10 at Laguna Seca.

MotoAmerica Roland Sands Design’s Super Hooligan Race at Laguna Seca 2022 – YouTube

The SuperHooligan race at Laguna Seca on July 10 saw a stock EVA Ribelle piloted by Stefano Mesa and fielded by Energica dealer Tytler’s Cycle compete against a field of 26 other racers on IC (internal combustion) bikes.   Stefano qualified 6th and ran almost all the 8-lap (plus one lap sighting and one lap for warmup) race in 6th to 8th. position, battling with our good buddy Nate Kern all the way to the final lap when Stefano’s battery finally started to overheat and he had to throttle back.

Stefano had a 13th place finish, but really caught the attention of the announcers, fellow competitors and 35,000 race fans in the stands who just could not believe what they were seeing.  The Tytler’s Cycle garage was crowded with curious competitors immediately after the race, trying to figure out what the hell it was that had passed them half an hour before.

Laguna Seca was also Stefano Mesa’s first time riding an electric motorcycle, and as he pointed out, it takes some adjustment: but also allowed him to focus far more effectively on his line and acceleration.  Something every Energica buyer soon discovers.

WE HIT THE BIG TIME
Energica appears on Jay Leno’s Garage Monday, October 17.

Jay Leno’s Garage – YouTube

If you’ve been paying attention to our social media you’ll know that last month, we recorded an Energica episode with the EGO+ RS and EVA Ribelle RS at Jay Leno’s Garage.  We also enjoyed a true bucket list event: a tour of two aircraft hangers chock full of rare and impressive cars, motorcycles and artifacts, including a room full of Brough Superiors – the largest single collection of these in a single location.

The Energica episode will air on Monday, October 17 at 9 AM PDT on Jay Leno’s YouTube Channel.

Energica Appears in the Movie Nope

NOPE | Final Trailer – YouTube

You need a fast bike to make your getaway, especially if the bad guys have a flying saucer.

We really liked NOPE although, or maybe because, the premise is even more preposterous and unworldly than Jordan Peele’s other highly acclaimed black-comic horrors like Get Out and Us. The main attraction is the alluring human and equine cast and snappy dialogue, but the highlight for us is when an Energica EVA EsseEsse9 makes an exciting cameo during the obligatory motorcycle chase scene.
