“Non-riding friends may seek altered states of consciousness through yoga, meditation, jogging, bicycling or other engrossing hobbies, not to mention alcohol or drugs.  But none of these have as the essential component of moving briskly through space on an energy-producing machine. Motorcycling may not have the physical benefits of yoga, jogging or bicycling, but the psychological experience of careening through the air while making split second judgments and movements yields its own deeply satisfying, if intangible, rewards.”
